If you’re a cultural foodie, you might have done a double-take when you read that headline. Gyros and naan? That’s not right. Gyros are served with pita bread, and naan with traditional Indian food.
And you would be correct. But I’m taking some liberties here because naan gyros have become a staple here at the Adventure Kitchen.

This versatile flatbread is great with traditional Indian recipes, for making gyros, eating with hummus, or on its own!
Equipment
- 1 Mixing bowl
- 1 cast iron skillet
- 1 (optional) stand mixer
Ingredients
- 2.25 tsp yeast
- .5 tsp sugar
- .75 cup warm water
- 2 cup flour + additional
- .5 tsp salt
- .5 cup dairy-free yogurt
- 3 tbsp melted plant-based butter
- 2 tbsp olive oil
- 1 tbsp coconut oil
Instructions
- Place the water, sugar, and yeast in a large mixing bowl. Let stand 10 minutes, until the yeast is bubbly.
- Add yogurt, melted butter, oil, salt, and flour. Stir to combine.
- Kneed for 10 minutes, either using a stand mixer or by hand on a floured surface.
- Cover and let rise for one hour.
- Divide the dough into 8 equal segments. On a floured surface, roll to create rounds 1/4 inch thick.
- Heat the coconut oil in a cast iron skillet over medium.
- Place the rounds in the skillet one at a time. Cook each side until golden brown and bubbling, about 60 seconds per side. Add coconut oil as needed.
Notes
Tip: If you don’t have dairy-free yogurt handy, substitute 1/2 cup coconut milk plus 1 tbsp white, rice wine, or apple cider vinegar.
To create your gyros, top the naan with your favorite ingredients, such as:
- Grilled chicken
- Thinly cut beef (Buona Italian Beef and SteakUms both work well)
- Tabouli salad
- Dairy-free yogurt
- Black olives
- Banana peppers
- Jalapeno peppers
- Sumac
- Tzatziki sauce
- Pickled onions
