Ever since I was a little kid, honey mustard was my go-to sauce for chicken strips or chicken nuggets. As a grown-up, I love this grown-up version of my favorite condiment on salads topped with crispy chicken. You’re going to love this homemade honey mustard recipe.
What Is Honey Mustard?
If you’ve somehow been living under a rock and you’ve never yet encountered honey mustard, you’re in for a real treat.
In its simplest form, honey mustard is precisely what it sounds like – honey blended with mustard, often in equal parts.
What does honey mustard taste like? It’s sweet, tangy, and just a little bit salty.
Homemade Honey Mustard Tips
The recipe below uses Dijon mustard, but you can use any mustard on hand – spicy brown, hot mustard, yellow mustard, etc. I prefer dijon because of its previous relationship with white wine – it goes very well with the flavor of white wine vinegar.
And again, you can swap out the vinegar if you don’t have white wine vinegar on hand. Any vinegar – rice, red wine, white, or apple cider, for instance – will do, but each will impart a different flavor profile.
You may even choose to include some add-ins, like ground mustard (a quarter teaspoon affords a spicy kick), lemon juice, salt, or cayenne pepper. Feel free to experiment and discover what you like best.
Why heat the honey? Doing so makes it thinner and easier to mix. Be careful not to heat it too long, or it will boil away into a crystalized, sticky syrup.
