Tucked away just off of University Avenue is a sandwich shop that doesn’t look like much on the outside. The bland brick exterior and bars on the windows make it look more like a prison than a thriving local business. But just like your mom always told you, “Never judge a book – ur, restaurant – by its cover.” Wicked Good Sandwiches is a treasure trove, loved by Austin Peay students and the Clarksville community alike. It’s a place where you can have a beer after a long day at work or thrash to your favorite local music.
Don’t take my word for it, though. Ask any customer, and you’ll hear responses such as the restrained “THAT WAS THE BEST SANDWICH EVER,” the sincere “You guys made us feel at home,” and the honest “Small local business that features local music. Solid.”
I imagine it is reminiscent of what restaurants used to be like. Attentive – but not annoyingly so – personal, and oh, so comfortable. Comfortable for your wallet too, as you can eat a good-sized meal for under ten dollars.
The Menu
The menu is stacked with the delicious Italian Grinder and aptly named Green Monstah. The Fried Mozzarella Rolls and readily available draft beer make this the place to live out every little indulgence you have tried to hide. However, it’s worth noting that you may be left waiting 20-25 minutes if you go during a busy time, as the small business can’t always keep up with the current demand.
The Music
The local music scene is also thriving through this restaurant. They book multiple shows every month, as well as the occasional karaoke or open mic. The owners also saw the lack of local music at the annual Riverfest event and sponsored a stage for multiple years.
Patrick Long, phenomenal vocalist for local band The Low Blow is not afraid to profess his love for this esteemed venue. “The independent scene really stems out from Wicked Good… you kind of build these relationships with people who come out to shows.”
The Business
Jason Yates is co-owner of Wicked Good along with his wife – she also happens to be the mastermind in the kitchen. Yates is very humble about being such a successful local business owner. But with a stack of local awards every year since 2014, the evidence really speaks for itself.
When asked what he would like to see in happen regards to local business, he said, “Clarksville is growing. We have a couple of vacancies around here and we would love to see some more [local businesses].” He envisions being surrounded by local businesses and changing his neighborhood for the better.
Whether you’re into wicked good food, wicked good music, or wicked good people, Wicked Good Sandwiches has something for you. You can find their full menu and event schedule on their website.
